If your yacht or motor yacht is 24 metres or more in length for commercial use, we have a dedicated service to ensure you have the correct, up-to-date charts and publications onboard to comply with your Flag State Regulations and the SOLAS Convention.
As the Captain or Navigation Officer of a Super Yacht, you will want to ensure the safety of your vessel, owners, passengers and crew by having the correct charts and publications onboard for the intended voyage, corrected to the latest Admiralty Notices to Mariners.
The Large Yacht Code applies to “Red Ensign” flagged motor or sailing vessels of 24 metres in load line length and over and which, at the time, are in commercial use for sport or pleasure and which carry no cargo and no more than 12 passengers. The Code requires the carriage of appropriate charts and publications (section 19.1).
Ensuring you have the latest editions of charts and publications onboard, and correcting these important sources of navigational information is a time consuming business, particularly when your yacht has a busy and complicated voyage plan.
Todd Navigation, an International Admiralty Chart Agent, can help by providing you with all your chart and publication requirements, together with the means to organise your charts and publications, and keep them up-to-date. We will look after all your requirements, wherever you are in the world.
Following an initial enquiry from a Super Yacht, we will request information from you to determine the scope of services you require from us. Your requirements will be based on your operating area(s), anticipated voyages, type of charts used (paper or electronic or both), publications (Admiralty or Imray or both), digital publications, and types of updating services required.
Your solution may depend on the Flag State of your vessel and its requirements. We can help you decipher the legislation. We have an excellent team of experts to assist, including our Managing Director William Todd, Master Mariner, and Brian Miller (Royal Navy retired), Digital Products Manager. We understand that the ultimate navigation package is different from yacht to yacht, and with our experience in conjunction with your needs, we will arrive at an agreed navigational resource for your vessel.
CHART & PUBLICATIONS OUTFIT MANAGEMENT SERVICE
Our Chart and Publications Outfit Management Service provides continuing global support for your navigational resources onboard. At the time of the initial supply of charts and publications to a vessel, or when we take on the management of your existing charts and publications, we record the edition date of each chart and book, and enter these into our software. We then provide new editions of charts and publications automatically, usually at intervals of one month, or at intervals dictated by you, or your vessel’s port rotation. This service is most beneficial to Super Yachts which operate in a fixed area.
An added benefit of our Outfit Management Service is the Weekly Chart Correction List – this lists the Notices to Mariners (permanent, temporary and preliminary) the navigator must apply relevant to the charts onboard. Charts and publications can be active or inactive (sleeping); inactive products do not have new editions supplied.
Todd Navigation has experience within our organisation to ensure your vessel has the appropriate charts and publications, from British Admiralty to IMO, ITU, OCIMF, Chamber of Shipping, etc. If your vessel is on a particular voyage and you do not require new editions of charts for areas the vessel may not visit again, we can limit the Outfit Management Service to only those charts and publications necessary to the safe and statutory operation of the ship. We help to ensure your onboard charts and publications are always updated and legal.
Each vessel receives a laminated Outfit Management Supply Certificate and inventory binder, which can be shown to Port State Inspectors/Class Surveyors if necessary. The certificate lists the services we have agreed to supply. It is renewed annually, together with a copy of the vessel’s current inventories.
PAPER CHARTS AND PUBLICATIONS
Todd Navigation is an International Admiralty Chart Distributor appointed by the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO), and is one of the leading Chart Distributors in the UK and Ireland. We offer a worldwide stock of fully corrected British Admiralty charts and an extensive selection of nautical books and publications from the UKHO, International Maritime Organisation (IMO), ITU, International Chamber of Shipping, Brown, Son & Ferguson, Shipping Guides, OCIMF, Witherby, etc.
We are also a Premier agent of Imray, the leading supplier of charts and cruising guides specifically designed for yachtsmen. Paper charts continue to form an important part of many vessels’ navigational resources, despite the increasing adoption of electronic charts in ECDIS systems for day-to-day use.
Paper charts offer a backup system that can be used in the event of ECDIS failure on board a yacht, as well as being better suited for discussing and planning itineraries with yacht owners and guests. We also offer a storage and correction facility. Your chart folios can be stored for a specified period of time, then corrected up-to-date and despatched to your vessel ready for the next voyage, for example, crossing the Atlantic to winter in the Caribbean.
ELECTRONIC CHARTS AND ECDIS
As an International Admiralty Chart Agent, we can supply your vessel with the Admiralty Vector Chart Service (AVCS). Electronic Navigation Charts (ENCS), when supplied through AVCS, are official government charts, and as such meet SOLAS carriage requirements, when used in a type approved ECDIS. We manage your ENC holdings through e-Navigator Fleet Manager, and provide a superior service for the supply of permits for new ENCs at short notice. Along with Admiralty quality and unrivalled coverage, you’re also assured of the most up-to-date information available. Automatic updating comes as standard with no additional cost via the internet.
The Admiralty Information Overlay (AIO) and worldwide Temporary and Preliminary Notices to Mariners ensure that all your digital charts are kept up to date electronically.
ADMIRALTY DIGITAL PUBLICATIONS (ADP) AND AENPS
The UKHO’s acclaimed range of navigational publications have evolved in the form of Admiralty Digital Publications (ADP) and AENPs. Tide Tables, Admiralty List of Lights and Fog Signals, ALRS and Sailing Directions can now be purchased in digital format, with fully-searchable software that enables you to save time, whilst offering greater functionality than a standard book. What’s more, all are easily updatable by Weekly CD-ROM, email, or download from the UKHO’s website.
A majority of Flag States now accept ADP and AENPs as a digital alternative to the paper publications, so you can be assured that the digital data you’re carrying is official and compliant. Each installation comes with a signed certificate from the UKHO which can be presented to Port State Inspectors.
TODD NAV PAYS
The principle underlying PAYS (Pay-As-You-Sail) is that a vessel is only charged for the ENC cells actually “sailed over” during a voyage. The vessel is supplied with an extensive set of AVCS electronic chart permits on a three month licence. Any cell can be used without charge for passage planning. On the vessel all cells worldwide are immediately available for use within the ECDIS. There is a clear safety case for this approach over schemes where a permit needs to be delivered to the vessel first. The administrative burden to the vessel is reduced since all charts are available all the time with no special actions required.

MERCHANT SHIPPING NOTICES ON CD
Under the Carriage of Nautical Publications rules all UK vessels over 12 metres are required to carry Merchant Shipping Notices. The carriage of certain notices is also required on vessels of a collective group of Red Ensign Registries, namely Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Gibraltar, Isle of Man and the UK. An annual “M” Notices subscription from Witherby Seamanship provides your vessel with a complete database of current “M” Notices, kept up-to-date via a bi-monthly CD-ROM.
CHART TABLE INSTRUMENTS AND OTHER ESSENTIALS
Traditional chart table instruments are available ex-stock for all the requirements of the Navigator working with paper charts. Todd Navigation stocks a wide range of parallel rules and dividers in various sizes and types, together with navigational triangles, pencil compasses, breton (portland) plotters, 2B pencils, erasers, chart correcting pens, etc. We also offer a full range of supporting navigational equipment, including sextants, binoculars, clocks and barometers, code and courtesy flags.
With all the navigational products installed and operational, our service manages your chart and publications inventories, whether paper or digital. New editions and updates are provided automatically, either physically or electronically and at agreed intervals, and delivered direct to the yacht’s current location by courier or by email as appropriate. With an efficient after-hours service to provide new products or vital support, and with preferential rates from couriers such as DHL, we are in a position to provide you with a complete package at competitive rates.
